A Morning in Oban

On Sunday, before catching our noon train back to Glasgow, we walked the beautiful Corran Esplanade along Oban's coastline.  Less sun and more clouds, but still nice.

At the end of the esplanade are the ruins of Dunollie Castle, seat of the MacDougall clan who ruled the islands and coast of this area of Western Scotland.  The castle ruins sit high up on a hill so you can look back over the town and waters of Oban.  Below the castle is a house and museum, but we didn't have time to check those out so opted for the free castle instead.

Sleeping Beauty, are you in there?

Along the side of the roads in Oban and on the islands are wild yellow irises and magenta foxgloves just coming into bloom.  They provided a visual treat as we walked or rode.

Post-ice cream sugar surge:

The pink shop is called The Pokey Hat, which is what they call ice cream cones on the west coast of Scotland.

What a cute town, and we didn't see it all.  Guess we'll just have to return some day!!  Definitely worth a visit, though some say avoid it in July and August due to tourist crowds.
